''The main and most important benefit of twin rudders is the greater directional control. This allows much easier handling in tough sailing conditions which is due to the fact that the rudders immerse further with heel; resulting in higher levels of rudder control as the angle of heel increases. When sailing, the leeward rudder will always be in its most efficient position whilst the windward rudder will be creating very little or no drag. The simple result of this is outstanding performance and control.'' ![]() |

| S T A N D A R D E Q U I P M E N T - ELAN 310 Performance | |||||||||||
![]()
"This is a sensational yacht to sail, quite the most fun I have had on a yacht to this size." Yachting Monthly, December 2009. "Downwind, in flat water and just three up, we clocked an effortless 11 knots." Practical Boat Owner, December 2009 "The Elan 310's performance is a revelation, fast and sure-footed. Ten knots has never seemed so easy." Yachting Monthly, December 2009. "For all her undoubted pace, the Elan 310 doesn't make life hard for her crew" Practical Boat Owner, December 2009.
The Elan 310 features a combination of twin-rudder steering and T-bulb keel. They are rarely seen on boats of this size making this a giant leap forward for the Slovenian boat-building company. Elan are proud that although the 310 is the smallest model of range, "it is one born out of intense effort and scrutiny." Not only will it serve as the first step to the Elan range - "a lure to tempt new owners into on-going Elan ownership" - but also as "a boat conceived in the economic turmoil of the global recession it is intended to serve as more than just a so-called 'starter' boat." The Elan 310, designed with the pedigree of Rob Humphreys, is designed to be sufficiently easy to sail and to carry the badge of a beginner's boat. However, at the next level, she is sophisticated enough in her sailing capabilities to convince passionate sailors that here is an affordable boat that gives them the performance and general scope they might expect to find in a much bigger and more expensive boat. In addition to the above, the 310's T-Bulb keel, significantly lowers the ballast centre of gravity allowing a reduction of displacement for a given level of stability. In comparison to the Elan 31 for example, "the non-dimensionalised ratio of displacement: length shows a marked difference in sailing characteristics". The 310 should clock in at about 158 against the old 31's 197. And this number is achieved at a similar stability level to the 31.
